Sally Mann is an unbelievably inspiring photographer. She has courted controversy, like Jock Sturges over the naked pictures of her children, as any naked photograph of a child is deemed pornography but I think her images are stunning and innocent and remind me so much of a childhood spent muddy or dressing up, outside, 'bored' and entertaining ourselves, with the occasional black eye (from Piers / Luke!).
In the introduction to her book, Immediate Family, Mann writes, "we are spinning a story of what it is to grow up. It is a complicated story and sometimes we try to take on the grand themes: anger, love, death, sensuality, and beauty."
Sally Mann studied creative writing at Putney, US and lives in Virginia.
